    Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.

    STIHL ElastoStart™
The ElastoStart™ starter handle is an exclusive feature of STIHL. It is a starting grip with a built-in shock absorber that helps reduce the effort when pulling on the starter cord. The ElastoStart™ starter grip noticeably reduces the sudden peak forces (compression) normally felt during cranking. The forces which occur at the grip after the first compression stroke are smoothed out.

Are You Ready for a STIHL?

MS 661 C-M is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 71.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Power Needed a saw that could handle large trees. I bought my MS 661 with a 28" bar and I am running a skip chain. The large oaks I am cutting are larger than that. Even with the full bar engaged, it ripped through the wood! The power never failed. I love it! It is heavy but you can't have that power without the weight. You understand that when you need big power so I do not consider this a negative.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst saw I've ever used. Only worked once out of the four times I took it out. I will not buy another Stihl again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Power to Weight Ratio & Cost I don't write reviews until I've worked a tool for a few months. I work a couple of hardwood tree farms and some smaller wood lots and have found the MS-661 C-M a very dependable and capable saw for moderate tree size. I carry a 36" bar and cut red and white oak along with sugar maple and ash mostly. The saw has very good power and good balance with very low vibration. It starts easily after refills and after it has be sitting for a couple of weeks, any longer I usually run it empty and then store it. This saw loves moderate size 3 to 4 ft. diameter hard wood just keep a sharp chain on it and let it do the work. I hope it lasts as long as my 044 has. For a saw of its size it really doesn't fatigue you to use it like some other saws of comparable size. Even the noise is much less than one would expect from a 5.5+ cu. in. saw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great saw for felling timber I love this saw,as an owner of the ms880magnum, 201t,and a ht131 pole saw and a backpack blower ,I knew the quality would be great, but man this saw cuts like a dream.everyone should do themselves a favor and buy a ms661.cant wait to get back in the woods.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely love this saw Hi contemplated and researched saws for a few weeks. It finally came down to the 461 or the 661 CM. The 661 CM won and became a no brainer decision when I found it was on sale and not much difference in price. Took it out last weekend and cut up some 20" maple and it was like butter. Very pleased with the performance. Picking up the 36" light bar on Wednesday and plan to dig into a 4' tree on the weekend. Very pleased with the performance. I was a little nervous about the weight. However, this is how I came to my decision. I have a smaller saw with a 16" blade. I'll use this for limbing and smaller trees. I have the 24" and 36" bars for the 661 and it giving me choice. Because I'm only using the 661 for larger jobs weight isn't really a factor as I'm not twisting the saw around. Besides you just lay it down on the logs and it tears through it. ;)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This saw has great power and antivibe Excellent saw powerful, reliable, durable, and very well built can be a little hard to start under heavy work loads
Date published: 2018-01-29
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great antivibe Just bought this saw a few months ago and absolutely love it. From what I've seen they had a few problems when they first came out, but it seems they have solved the issues. The most notable feature for me is the antivibe system. I've been running an 044 for years, and once I ran this saw I was in love. Smooth as silk. I was a little nervous about the M-tronic, but I love the way it runs and after watching a video that showed a breakdown of it, I see how simple it actually is. I can see how it is actually better than a standard carb. I needed a saw with more power and this has delivered beyond expectations. I must say for the size of this saw the weight is really quite manageable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Piece of Equipment. Purchased the 661 thinking it would be a neutered 660 to fit in with our changing times and EPA Regulations etc. I was wrong this saw has in many situations outperformed my 660's and 066. I do NOT do out of the box reviews so I waited 2 months to voice my opinion. This thing is a beast and very reliable! Running a 32" Bar and Chain to tackle Bur Oak's and Catalpa's. Stihl hit one out of the park in my opinion with the "Improved 660". I run alcohol free gasoline so I watch my fuel costs and have noticed it is more efficient. For a lack of better terms I get better fuel mileage with the 661. So if you need Artillery for back up on tough jobs here it is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from True powerhouse tool A serious saw for the real tough jobs. Starts easily and has an enormous amount of power. The M-Tronic system has been flawless so far. The saw is a bit heavy but the saw does all the work. You will not notice the weight on the tough cutting tasks. Very happy with the purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every penny To everyone who has complained about not starting when hot there's no need for choking it hit the decompression button and one pull it up and running. As far as the nuts coming loose I have never had a problem as far as I am concerned it's a great saw the best money can buy and if you take care of it it will never do you wrong, and respect it its not a toy very powerful a little bit on the heavy side but not bad

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great saw, some issues Overall this saw is a beast! With great balance and aggressive cuts. Problems with starting it back up during heavy work load, waiting 10 to 15 min for it to cool down is annoying!!!! I like the mc441 more lighter not much difference in power. No down time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far so good I have to say with all the reviews I have read I was a bit skeptical about this product. I must say with the 25” or 30” I am impressed!!! I have cut around 40 trees so far and it has not slowed down. I cut around 50 rick a year and needed a reliable saw, don’t be afraid to give this one a try.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Built Alaska Tough! I bought this saw two years ago and have used it extensively to cut old growth hemlock and sitka spruce on my land. This saw handles the big stuff like none other. I have put countless of hours on this saw under some extreme conditions and it never misses a beat! Plenty of power to cut through the biggest logs with total ease! Best investment I've made in a long time. This saw has made my life much easier!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Do not hesitate! I read a bazillion reviews when shopping for a saw for tornado clean up. I chose this saw despite some of the complaints and I am proud to say that I have experienced none of the issues outlined in other reviews. This thing is bad to the bone. We have 100 year old oaks and pines on our property and I haven't ran into one yet that can slow this saw down. It will work all day long without a hiccup. Do not hesitate to buy this saw. Do not worry about it being heavy, it does all the work for you (or you can hit the gym). It will get into a cut and pull right through it. I have never experienced anything like it with any other saw. This is the only way to go!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This chainsaw has a perfect power to weight ratio. I bought my first stihl saw about 20 years ago.It was the 066 magnum, and it sure did a great job for me. It was used to fell trees and for everyday firewood cutting. I sold this saw due to lack of work. i recently purchased the new MS 661 magnum and WOW is this the saw for me. Plenty of power and very easy to start and surprisingly light weight for its class. This saw will do it all. LOVE MY STIHL. Todd G Robertson.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very powerful saw and glad I bought it I needed a 36" bar saw and found the 661 and one other brand's saw. I have a smaller stihl saw so I went with the 661 due to brand awareness. To be honest if it wasn't for this for this specific difficult cut I probably wouldn't have spent so much on a saw but I'm glad I did. The only issue I have had is trying to restart a hot saw but a cleaning of the plug seemed to do the trick. The saw has a huge amount of power and so far I am very happy with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Saw This is a great saw for large jobs. It can be a bit heavy after about an hour of use but it can get the job done.I was hoping that it would have just a bit more power than it does, but it still does what I need. Can be a bit tough to start at times.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from chain blade nuts spin off while in use no matter how tightly torqued First of all , I run a tree service and got this saw to cut tree stumps. Plenty of power but blade nuts spin off after about one minute of use. No matter how tight, there's been times I thought I was going to break the stud off. I had to buy nylon self locking nuts to use it. Good luck!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice hefty saw Shy of an 880 for milling or clearing the rainforests - I can't imagine anyone needing a bigger saw. The 661 is a beast. It don't find huge power advantage over the 461, but it's noticeable. Love the MTRONIC. This saw doesn't let down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful saw I see a lot of people having a problem with the saw starting after running hot or after running for long periods of time. I found when you re-start any of the saws just pull the cord with out choking or doing anything you would do when cold starting and especially with the mtronics. Usually starts every time one pull because the gas is already there.if you re-choke after running hot, it floods the carburetor causing the no starts.Just pull the cord. Unleash the beast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm a 3rd generation timberman. Being a Missouri family with German heritage, we have always known what the best saw out there is... Stihl! This saw has made so many advancements, I am very impressed. Have solely operated it for one year now without a hitch, has never shut off when laid down during idle. If you can handle the few extra pounds, the gas tank is larger for fewer fill ups throughout the day, new anti-vibration mounts and springs have really improved kickback vatigue, as well as new air filters. Also, the chain cap cover has nuts that stay in once loosened. Overall, I have not found anything I don't like about the brilliantly engineered advancements that have been developed. Dependability at its finest but hold on, this chainsaw aien't for boys! Way to go Stihl, cheers to taking such pride in the development of this awesome chainsaw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tree eating beast I have a small hard wood timber farm of a few hundred acres and needed to fell and buck some very large red oak, ash and maple. So far I'm into about 70 hours on the saw and it starts on the second pull almost every time. Today when it was 88 degrees out and I stopped for a 20 minute break it didn't act like it wanted to start. I turned ignition to off cranked it three times and then did a normal start and it took right off. Saw has a great power to weight ratio and it's easy to clean and maintain after use. I Stihl (pun intended) use an 044 for light use and a new 193T for in tree work. The 044 has got to be 16 or so years old and still cuts like there's no tomorrow. I clean and tune my own equipment and keep them lubed and clean, they seem to last which brings down the investment when you consider the equipment should last you for many years if properly maintained.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beast of a saw Originally bought this saw for milling, but decided to use it for my felling needs and I've never looked back Im pretty sure I'll never come across anything this saw can't handle.ive ran 066 and 660s and this saw is way above them as far as power and torque and the m tronic take the guess work out of tuning and adjusting for conditions.its been very reliable so far usally two pills and it fires right up.Thos is most definitely a pro grade saw,I had to order mine cause trees companies in my area bought my dealer out.truly the best saw out of the 4 Stihl saws I own and it definitely kept the Stihl reputation up as being the best .thanks Stihl!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Alaskan mill powerhouse I bought this saw to run a 36" Granberg mill through hardwoods. I put a 42" bar with ripping chain on and the mill gives a touch over 33" of cutting width with that set up. The widest I've had a chance to cut has been about 28" over short runs, with sustained cuts out to about 20". With a sharp chain the saw walks through all that without a second thought. I'll be taking down a big maple soon and working the mill at max width all day on it, I'll update my review once I do. My only complaint with this saw is it can be a little finicky to start when it's hot, but we just find clean up tasks to kill 30 minutes and it fires up first or second pull once things have cooled down. That or just hold the throttle wide open rather than using the automatic Start setting. The details on this saw are great too - love the fuel caps, love the easy adjust chain tension, love the embedded bolts on the chain retainer plate so we aren't chasing nuts around a dirty job site. This is my first Stihl and I'm a convert now. This is a big, expensive saw and it's a lot to throw around, but if you need the power it's your only option & it delivers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Saw I am 16 years old and make money on the side by cutting low risk trees and milling them with an Alaskan Mill into lumber to sell. I am by no means an expert but have a decent idea what I am doing. I love my 661! I purchased it right after Christmas in 2015. The 661 typically runs either a 25" or 36" bar with 33rs3 chain and is unstoppable even in the most gnarly wood. The balance of the saw is great but I find it to be perfectly balanced with a 25" bar. The 36" gets a little nose heavy but keeps the saw very nimble and maneuverable. A little expensive for me, but it continually proves it is worth every penny. On a side note I was cutting some trees for a farmer and got hung up in a gum tree by a gust of wind. As I walked back to the truck to get a wedge and saw tool the wind stopped, my saw fell out of the kerf, and got smashed by a 22" gum tree. This saw is so well engineered that similar to the front of a car folding like an accordion in an accident, the top handle on the saw folded like an accordion and absorbed the force of the tree. A few weeks later the saw was back up and cutting wood again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Strong Running Machine We have a new in ground pool, and had an old, large Poplar tree in the back yard. With this huge tree, the pool was going to stay full of leaves, all the time. It had to go. I needed a saw powerful enough to take this tree out. I did some research, and off I went, to purchase the king of saws. I was after the Stihl MS 880 Magnum. I looked in several stores, and nobody had the 880 in stock. Then I found the MS 661 C-M, with a 32 inch bar, and a skip tooth chain. This thing is a beast. It ate that Poplar tree for breakfast, and even ate a Cedar tree, that got too close to it. When I was done, it was looking around for more. Way to go, Stihl !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw I bought the saw because my old farm boss couldn't keep up with the clean up from hurricane matthew. I have not been disappointed once by this saw. It takes down trees in a hurry. Wind blown pines, white oaks, and large gum trees. Some of those oaks were 44 inches and against a 36 inch bar with a full skip chain, not a problem. My saw runs great but recently I started thinking it could be better. I sent it to a west coast faller and it is now a Magnum Insane-O Magnum. Check his 661c on youtube. hotsaws101 it runs like the terminator on steroids now.
